Road to Bethlehem:
Learning To Trust

1“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.  2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to their own town to register. 4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.  6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”
Luke 2:1-7
I. Trust God’s PLAN when you hit a detour. Luke 2:1-3
  • God’s detours are often PATHWAYS to His PROMISES.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)
Remember: Trusting God’s plan requires OBEDIENCE not understanding.

II. Trust God’s PRESENCE when the road gets bumpy.  Luke 2:4-5
  • God may not remove every HARDSHIP, but He never ABANDONS His children.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
Remember: Trusting God’s presence provides PEACE not explanations.

III. Trust God’s PURPOSE when you can’t see the outcome.  Luke 2:6-7
“And those who know Your name put their trust in You; for You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.” Psalm 9:10 (NKJV)
  • If God has a PLAN and His PRESENCE is with us, we can trust Him with our FUTURE.
Remember: Trusting God’s purpose, often means moving into the UNKNOWN.

Let’s make this Personal
  • What road are you currently traveling that requires trust?
  • In what area of life are you tempted to worry instead of trust?
  • Do I expect explanations from God, before I’ll obey Him?
  • Do I trust God even when I don’t understand?
